Making sense of "Yin" and "Yang" . . .

Recommended Posts

Good shot at it.  I like it except for:

I am an Atheist so the part about God has no meaning.

Winter:  Rest from Yin work

I notice that many people seem to think that "Yin" and "Yang" are simple and obvious to understand.

Hi Lataif,

Your thread is captioned - Making sense of "Yin" and "Yang" . . .

But according to dawei"Squares and corners spoken are not the eternalness [of squares and corners]"

So when I speak of "Yin" and "Yang" - they are no more yin and yang?

ok, as I'm quoted, I'll bite..

The first chapter of Laozi told us that when a word arises, it is not the eternal meaning of the word spoken.. which my above quote was a play on.

Yin and Yang describe life.   If you want to just understand life, those two are enough.  If you want to understand more, Not-Two... and then Not-One...

Meditate in The Void wu-wei-lessly?

This is not a bait.

So where does Yin & Yang fit in not-two?

If we say YinYang then if they are both one, why bother saying YinYang?

YinYang is just "Polarity" and Movement between the poles of any Polarity is "Qi".

Tao is not a thing and thus is not a producer, not a force, not a location.

Dao is just "The Way It Goes".

The only constant is "Change". That's what we study.

So the only way for "Nothing" to Change is to become "Something".

Some "Thing" arises, and this One thing will HAVE polarity, or "YinYang" - a Being/Non-Being, beginning/End, Inside/Outside, etc.

It is still One, but it HAS Two.

Since Yin and Yang are not things themselves either, but are symbolic designators of Polarity, this is what is meant by "Not Two".

One HAS Two - One doesn't "split" into Two things. One HAS two - Up/Down, Inside/Outside, etc.
YinYang is "Two" that is "Not Two".

Movement between the poles of these and other polarities is Qi, or "energy".

So this Describes Dao, WuJi, TaiJi, "Not Two", and Qi.

still mind and still two.

Trying to meditate on One with Two makes Three :D

That seems to move further away

Hi dawei,

Not necessary...

maybe just a reverse sequence... but of what ?

I think this is "reverse sequence": One <= Two <= Three.

Returning to One - not just any One.

But The One ~ whatever it is or is not.

It may be a better argument from Void=Form.

There is no unrolling and unfurling... no going out and coming back.   No there and here.  It is all perceived.

Duality has a greatness in defining life and such things for us to cling to.

It has a great limitation in revealing there is no duality in Dao.

Zen tried to fix this idea to a degree.

Didn't work very well.

Depends if you follow Zen or not :)

Just means, I'll give Zen the respect of how they lead me to Laozi...  and ultimately home... to Dao.

I like to pick on Zen whenever I can.  Nothing against what they have done regarding the merging of Buddhism and Daoism.  It's just that some things I read just don't fall into the realm of common sense.  Some things don't even make sense.

Yin and Yang as polarities works for me, two opposite but complementary forces that cannot disappear but can be brought into harmony and work together instead of one or the other being dominant.

yin-yang undivided.

That's Chi.

Can't divide Yin/Yang.  We can speak only of their influences.
