Buddhist teachers tend to use the term "soul" quite a bit differently than many other paths from what I have found. Same with Taoists. I'm way too new to anything Buddhist to even start to try to explain.

When most paths talk about the "soul" and "soul retrieval", it is more like parts of it missing. These parts missing/not still connected to us due to past traumas, accidents and such. Some folks seem to see this as more literal, others as more psychological, many as both.

I suspect it originated with the Bön - Tibetan Buddhism and Bön are so intertwined, it's difficult to tease out what comes from where...

The Yungdrung Bön teachings include nine "vehicles" (http://ravencypresswood.com/abou/). The first four are considered "causal vehicles" and the soul retrieval methods and rituals are a part of that. The "higher" vehicles relate to sutra, tantra, and dzogchen.

According to the description of the program, I suspect that RInpoche will be combining the soul retrieval principles with experiential practices from the Dzogchen teachings as that is his primary focus in teaching. In the course description, he mentions omitting the traditional soul retrieval rituals and ceremonies to focus on the core teachings. By this he is usually referring to developing familiarity with and stability in resting in the inner refuge - the gateway to the nature of mind. This is the foundation of his teachings regarding healing, in general.

Is a soul something that actually departs from you?

What would cause it to depart?

"Soul" is his translation of "Lha", it means something like "life force". The lha can be lost if one's energy is incredibly compromised, it is usually a gradual process.

About This Series

These practices of Soul Retrieval can help you tap into the ultimate source of healing. Done daily through the entire year of this course, they have the potential to transform your life. They can help you to:

  • Avoid losing your vitality when faced with difficult life challenges.
  • Revitalize your personal life, family life and professional life.
  • Recognize powerful internal and external sources of healing.
  • Experience healing on all levels—physically, energetically, psychologically and spiritually.
  • Come home to your inherently joyful and creative nature.
  • Bring increased happiness and well-being to others.
  • Progress on the path to higher liberation.

The practices in this course draw from the ancient Tibetan Bon Buddhist teachings of Soul Retrieval. They omit traditional soul-retrieval ceremonies and rituals and focus, instead, on the most essential elements of the core teachings.

That makes a lot more sense now you put it in this way.
