Non Profit Organization

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am going to be returning to the U.S. by the next year or year and a half. I am waiting for my wife's visa to be issued. I have been working on Jing Xin Yuan for a long time, since my teenage years, and the last 2yrs it has finally been extending its roots, and growing buds. I strongly belive the flowers will bloom for such teachings in the U.S.

I am not sure which state is best for a cultivation school, but I will be returning to NY to live with my family the first 6 months in order to settle things with a building of an organization. What I am looking to do is to take steps to start making one from China if its possible, or even find if there is anyone in the states who knows about Non Profit organizations.

This is really a posting for a bit of a helping hand. I look through internet resources on it, but most want money to gain any useful info. If there is anyone here who knows, or knows anyone who does, about Non Profit orgs, please let me know.

Also, if there is anyone with insight as to where, such a cultivation school as that which I am planning to establish, would be a good place to start. Any place but Nevada! Too commercial in Sedona I feel. And I am not about commercialism.

Insights and any help along the way will be so grately appreciated.

Peace and Blessings,

Ai Wei

In addition to beginning the lengthy 501© 3 application process, you might want to find other people with similar nonprofits who can provide guidance and book suggestions. Just a thought.

What do you mean by book suggestions?

In my response there was a link to a book from Nolo Press.

How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation

by Attorney Anthony Mancuso

Nolo Press is a respected publisher of books for lay-people to accomplish daunting legal tasks.

A few years ago I founded the Tenants Rights and Information Network. I went to the Rutgers Law School in Newark to have them help me create my bi-laws and apply for the NFP status. I opted for the 501 c 4 status (rather than a C3) - because I wanted to be able to legally lobby elected officials more than I wanted to offer donators a tax break.

There were costs due to the state and federal agencies but they were not steep.

If you want to incorporate in New York I am sure NYU has a law school to help you do this for free. -Or of course you can pay a lawyer lots of money to get it done somewhat faster.

Good luck!!!-Pat

For a non-profit, they sure do want a lot of money for a membership. Maybe it just seems like that since cash is so strapped in my family.

I was born in Brooklyn, Boro Park, and lived in both Boropark and Bensonhurst. My father now lives in Staten Island where I will go to when it is time. I am actually looking for the proper environment for such cultivation center. It can be Brooklyn, it may be Queens, or even outside NY. But for starters, it will be somewhere in Queens.

My Wing Chun Shifu lives in Brooklyn. Alan Goldberg, on Flatbush ave. between aves. k and L on Hubbard place.

Hi Lostmonk,

The beginner classes cost me 110 bucks Canadian for 3 months which teach the basic 108 movements. The continuing classes are 38 bucks CAD a month for two 2 hr classes a week, plus I can go to any of the other local branches on the other nights for free. The prices for seniors I think are around half of that. I consider it pretty reasonable, and it's a fraction of what I have seen some other taoist 'schools' charging. Most of the fee covers the hall rental etc, then some is kicked up to the regional, and national headquarters. The society also does fund raising for charities such as the tsuname relief fund etc... If you were seriously interested, but really couldn't afford the fees, I am pretty sure they could work something out with you. Master Moy's vision was to bring Tai Chi to all people.

Yes indeed they did their work for free at Rutgers Law School in Newark. As I noted - the state of NJ and feds had charges. NYU should have a similar program. It takes a few months longer then if you pay a law firm to do the work; almost a year in the case of TRAIN... but is time a big deal to you in this matter?

You can "hit the ground running" by working out yr bi-laws and asking those who you wish to be your officers-(you will probably need at least 3 people that will take on the titles FOR NO PAY...usually a president, VP a treasurer and a secretary)- One person can do several jobs but in NJ I needed to have 3 people on my board of directors in order to apply.

In fact for most NFP corporations the board is mostly a fund-raising operation...

Try asking on line at NYU for info on applying - it may be the way to get started - but I wouldn't start out telling them you are still in China as they can probably only work free for NY State residents.

good luck-Pat
