Neoadvaita has its flaws

Recommended Posts

Vajrayana has precise systematic step by step methods. .

Neoadvaita has no direct introduction, let alone a precise direct introduction.

Its just a bunch of guys talking for 2+ hours on youtube.

Based on how they talk and teach, Neoadvaitins don't recognize the fourth time as opposed to the conceptualizing mind (three times).

Not sure if this should be in the Vedanta forum, but it is an interesting topic. The Vedanta teachings have a lot of usefulness for many individuals but it depends on your level of understanding.

The whole point of Vedanta is that you are what you are looking for, you are what you are seeking. So any method just takes you away from who you are because it is just another way of seeking, so instead of using step by step methods you just stop seeking altogether and then you find. But (stealing this line from one of the vids) if you tell this to a lazy bum sitting on the sofa with a beer its unlikely to have any benefit, but if you say it to someone who has been struggling hard and striving for many years they might have a breakthrough.

There is no direct introduction as such but if you just abide in the silence of the teacher you can be directed to rest in the ground of being. Many of the internet videos can instruct you to just examine the nature of your basic consciousness, which surprisingly enough not many people have really considered to any depth.

"The Sutra of Complete Enlightenment" has a chapter which addresses deviations of practice into wrong views of naturalism a la neo-advaita and pop-zen.

Neo-advaitans are just all around confused.

Ramana Maharishi was a confusing guy.

Self-inqury is just a muddled version of Chandrakirti's Madhyamakavatara.

Is Neoadvaita still a good way to make money?

Or are there so many Neoadvaitins out there now, that the market is supersaturated?

OK sooo, I split this thread. Please find the insult each other, swear a lot while putting down teachers and paths, or just plain talk about random other stuff thread here: http://thetaobums.co...-topic-derails/

Unfortunately, this sort of excision leaves the thread completely unintelligible.

Therefore immediately following this excision I deleted all my posts preceding the quote above in this public area, while leaving the posts that were removed intact and after some reflection, I've now decided to replace all my blank posts here with this covering note.

If you're reading this as a guest and you want to read the posts that were excised, you will need to join the Taobums forum and login in order to to follow the link and read them, so that you can make up your own mind about to whom the criteria of "swear(ing) a lot while putting down teachers and paths, or just plain talk about random other stuff" apply.

I also started this thread here in an attempt to deal with this problem of "splitting and pitting" (as it is refered to here) : -

://thetaobums.com/topic/32826-pittingsplitting/

Finally, there quite a detailed discussion about Neoadvaita by James Swartz here, which probably covers all the major points: -

So without direct introduction, after many years the poor neoadvaitin finally recognizes unfabricated presence vs the conceptualizing mind.

Then what?

James Swartz deconstructs it thoroughly and unmercilessly in his writings.

All the Neoadvaitins criticize each other. Jeff Foster and Anadi come to mind.

James Swartz is yet another Neoadvaitin.

I guess that we'll have to agree to disagree on this.

You seem to be very bitter about whatever happened to you when you yourself were a neoadvaitin and you also seem to use the terms neoadvaitin and neoadvaita in an attempt to cause offence and to try to elicit a negative response.

Just out of interest, are there any advaita teachers living or dead whom you consider to be other than neoadvaitins?

Neoadvaita is a recognized term. Direct Path is not.

The point is that Vedanta / NeoAdvaita / Direct Path does not have direct introduction like Mahamudra.

My "favourite guy" in this area of knowledge is actually Krishna Menon - followed closely by John Levy :)

As far as Ramana is concerned I think that Jetsun hit the nail on the head with his quote: -

"This is suitable only for ripe souls. The rest should follow different methods according to the state of their minds"

I think that you should heed that advice.

The point is that your teachings don't have direct introduction like Mahamudra.

Its funny you Neoadvaitins think self-inquiry is profound, when its just a muddled version of Chandrakirti's Madhyamakavatara, a preliminary sutra level teaching.

I'll repeat that the accurate definition of "neoadvaita" is: -

Who says that's the definition of Neoadvaita?

Its not.

You are the prototypical Neoadvaitin, like James Swartz, Jeff Foster, Anadi etc. who believe they are the ultimate Vedantin.
