British PM is introducing internet filters which block "esoteric material"

There has been a lot of fuss recently about David Cameron introducing filters to the internet in the UK to block hardcore porn and violent websites, which has gained a lot of support from many groups such as mothers, but what has also been included hidden in the subprint is that there are also going to be blocks on other areas such as websites associated with alcohol as well as blocks on "esoteric material".

So that could mean that Qigong websites, alternative health, Taoist websites including this one, pretty much all the websites which talk about the real truth could be classed as "esoteric material" and blocked in the UK within the year! What the hell, the thought police are coming!

Here is the Huffington Posts article on it,http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/3670771 (sorry on mobile) apparently the Digital Rights group has flagged it up.

Change.org who are one of the main rights protest sites in the UK consider it a serious problem and have an official petition http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/uk-prime-minister-david-cameron-stop-the-unnecessary-censor-of-esoteric-websites-and-web-forums sign if you don't want an Orwellian state please.

Have you got a link to the actual policy from the Brit Govt. saying this?

I don't have the details of the policy I'm not sure if it is public yet, the issue has been raised by the Open Rights group who have been talking to ISP providers about what the ISP's are going to be expected to filter.

This is yet another example of how carefully Governments must be watched to prevent the sneaking in of controlling legislation hidden amidst wider issues. As always the reason given for the legislation will be the peoples safety and wellbeing - (CCTV is the perfect axample where huge segments of urban society are no longer able to leave their home without being observed on camera) - yet that lingering doubt remains that something more sinister may be at work

As I understand it, a "Block" will be put on by default, meaning that no-one in the UK should be able to access Porn etc. when logging on to the Internet. Anything depicting Rape or Snuff type stuff will be banned outright.

Good idea, in that it stops young kids using the family PC to do "innocent" searches & being bombarded with inappropriate Adult content. If Mum & Dad don't want junior to see that sort of thing, they'll need to keep the Filter on.

If you are Aged 18 or over (I'm well over) then you must "request" that the Block be re-moved. Believe you must prove your ID (So Police/Big Brother etc have ALL your private, personal details), then out of the kindness of their Hearts  they'll let you look at the whole entire Web. (Apart from the stuff mentioned in 1st paragraph).

Problem is, if "alternative" sites are also included in the stuff filtered out, I'll need to apply to have my Filter switched off.

(How to explain that one, to the other half...no dear I was just looking at a video of a Qi Gong Class, honest :excl: )

My conclusion is having lived a while outside of Britain is that it is a prudish country which can't deal sensibly with anything related to sex. I'm not defending rape porn and so on ... who could ... but the culture in England at least is so debased now into superficial nonsense and commerciality that these ideas on social policy are so clearly a) based on nanny state b ) based on received values c ) part of the general trend of paranoid social control. David Cameron has an eye to the next election where he needs to hold the core conservative vote which consists of middle class middle aged women who think Margaret Thatcher was god. Yuk.

One of the main problems is that the party in power all come from the repressive antiquated public school system which still indoctrinates their pupils into thinking that they are all superior Christian soldiers. So Cameron probably sees this legislation as a way to try to get the country to see things the way he sees them, not just with sexual matters but all beliefs and ideas which stray too far from his own traditional confined world view need to be reigned in. Yet 95% of the country have a different background to him and think nothing like him. Him and his whole party are like a relic from 100 years ago.

I fear that you are quite right. A single glimpse of the Daily Mail headlines can put me in a depression for a week.

Maybe we should have all gone to Eton (lol). I think the best response is to have a universal opt in campaign ... not on the basis of wanting to access porn but just to make the point that we don't want Govt. control. That way any attempt to use the database of opt-in people will become meaningless.

"Chang depressed with Media headlines Shocker ! (Exclusive interview Page 5)" :D

Know what you mean mate, I've zero interest in what Jordan, or any other Z list (so-called) Celebrity is up to.

A Newspaper should inform & entertain it's readers with actual NEWS !!!

World Events of note, Politics & Sport are fine.

Photos of Natural Events or unusual species, great.

Interviews with Interesting, Important or Unusual People (Dalai Lama / The Pope / Robert Mugabe, etc) all newsworthy.

Giving away the plot-line to tonights Soap Drama, repeating groundless rumour or inuendo = OUT OUT OUT.

Who's shagging whom = Def. Out !!!

The "i" seems to be the only Newspaper currently catering for my taste, but most places don't stock it !

I read the Guardian on-line ... it is hopelessly confused about issues like this ... one minute publishing wikileaks and snowden and the next post-modern feminist critique of ... well anything ... the state of the press is a good indication of how personal freedom and intellectual freedom have been discarded in recent years.

And once it gets started it won't be able to be stopped. Y'all know how governments are.

What is esoteric material mean?

Thats a very broad subject, because we have esoteric Christianity and Islam too.

Christians are okay in a "Christian" country.

Food for thought:-

The question we as citizens should ask when considering our respective Governments is who do they represent?

In most cases we will find that it is not us and this presents something of a problem.

That's interesting, considering the British were always obsessed with esoteric material.

Esoteric Islam is only a Trojan horse for proper Islam.

Well for the British Goverment. Children shouldnt find the esoteric material.

I suppose there's a risk of kids screwing with kundalini and whatnot, but it's still a censorship of different beliefs.

I totally disagree with the New Age bullshit out there, but I don't want it censored.
