If you are thinking of going to china...

Recommended Posts

Hi There,

I am not a company, but I know many who are looking for anyone who can teach English, be it

Conversational(Oral) English, Literature, Writing.

I will provide lots of guidance for anyone looking to come out here to China and live/teach.

It isn't easy, (most of the times) and one needs to know what to expect, the twists, and turns of the relationship between the school and the teacher, and much much more.

One is not alone in China, if they are in contact with me. I will make sure you will know everything you will need to know about your living out here and such.

If you are interested, please let me know. I will be glad to help you out in any manner I can.

I am simply offering an opportunity. There are no hidden charges, and no small print in this open door.

Peace and Happiness,

Dear Aiwei,

I have been planning a trip to China for a few months already. Many years ago, I spent about a month in Hong Kong, a week in Macau and a few weeks on Taiwan, but I have never been to "mainland" China. I have good friends in many places in China, primarily in Shanghai and Hong Kong. I have also been offered a job with the company 24/7 to teach english in Darian, but I am not so sure that is the way for me to go. A friend is teaching english in Hong Kong as an independant and very happy there. So I will have friends around as it is, but I am looking for something solid to count on that will pay better than the 24/7 offer so far. It may be best for me to start out with the 24/7 offer and then see what develops when I am there.

If you have any advice as to how to follow up with this sort of sketchy plan, I would very much appreciate it!-

Many thanks for the kind offer in any case! - Pat

Hi Pat,

I teach English out here 5 days a week, and my hours are about 15hrs a week. I have loads of free time from teaching English and use it to cultivate and such.

The schools offer a fully furnished apt., bills paid except phone and internet. It is a great deal actually and stable. A one year contract is the way to go, unless you want to do some travelling, then a 6month contract is good too. Not all school sgo for the 6month contract, but there are some.

Basically, it is a pretty easy job. Teaching children, or college students ow to speak English. And its only that.. Speaking. You only speak, offer materials to the students to practice reading aloud, and basicaly that's it.

You have weekends off, and Chinese holidays, which are many ... haha.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Peace,

Dear Aiwei,

This does sound very ideal in many ways. I guess there is very little actual money, just the place to live and most over-head expences. This is ok too, but it seems that I would need to have some savings for any other expences I have...Is this sort of position available around the country? I still like the sound of Darian as a location to live for a while. I love to be near the ocean when I can...It would also seem that some private teaching time would/could improve the income opportunities.

I like the idea of being able to paint and write poetry as well as keep-up with my meditation and basic work-outs.

Now all that remains is for me to sell off most of my furnishings and art collection so that I don't have to spend very much on storage for my things. So please wish me luck in my sales efforts and it may be that I will meet you next year in China!

In the meantime maybe I can help boost yr biz activity with the clothing you are trying to bring to the rest of us.....

With many thanks, and I happier heart for this exchange of ideas- Pat

:)

The salary for english teaching ranges from about 3500-10,000rmb a month. That is about 400-1100dollars a month. That;s alot of money out here.

I hope I do see you out here. I live in Shandong province. We have a coastal city called Qingdao which is home to Laoshan..a Daoist Mountain...I know of several schools next to there, and around Qingdao. ALso, Taian city, my first plae I taught for 2yrs, is home to Taishan..another Daoist mountain... and with exceptional Qi... hehehe

I will study all options and try to make the most wise of choices...- Thanks once more- Pat

The manners of synchronicity are wonderous. It is all resonance of the mind.

Great stuff. Let's see what you manifest from these choices...hehehe

Peace,

I keep hearing about these english teaching jobs. Do you have to follow a set curriculum? How do the schools do quality control etc? Why doesn't everyone do it? What's the real deal?

Thanks!

Thanks for posting this. I am interested. I picked up some Chinese when I worked in Taiwan fairly quickly but how much do you need to know before you start teaching English?

Hi ,

THere really is no set curriculum unless you make one, and even if you do, you don't have to follow it. Quality control.. haha that is something not seen out here.. As far as school quality, there are politics involved, but they have loads of money and offer the foreign teacher an nice furnished apartment, bills paid except phone, and sometimes except water and electricity.

Teaching is fairly easy, and only calls for Oral English, conversation. Every one probably doesn't know, and or is too afraid to step in the realm of China. It is not hat people think. China isn't the world of horses, and simple people anymore.. they have turned for the popular western culture due to gov. influence and commercialism. It is now turning to be as any other country, yet without people caring for thenext human as much as in the west... I can go on... don't want to. haha

Other than that, any foreigner coming out here will have a good time in time, and live rent free and make more money than the locals.. at least 3times.

As for full ideas of living in china.. I will write it later..:)

Peace

You don't really need to know much Chinese.. basically, you don't need any. Even though some schools have students who will not speak any English, it will be fun, and it is fine. Schools do not expect a foreigner to know how to speak Chinese.

If you have any college degree, it makes it easier to find a job. Teaching experience is a plus, but not so important. Schools only want to have an English teacher, and a face.. haha really.

To begin, make copies of any and all diplomas, passport, and a recent photo. Those are asked for by the school to make sure you have a degree and that you are American.. haha

Once I have your word that you are planning to come out here, and the time you are coming, I can begin getting you a job. ^_^

Peace,

Temporary work would be about 6 months, but you would end up teaching for only 4 and a half. Your visa would be for 6months. You can also do summer work for 2 months.

I don't have a college degree, and I have been teaching here for 2 and a half yrs. Its really no problem.

Teaching experience helps find a job, and a TEFL certificate is the next best thing if no college degree.

There are online TEFL courses. I forgot the link to some of them, but they are there, and are accepted out here...as long as it says TEFL... haha

Peace,

Aiwei
