If you could pick 3 books to take with you...

Recommended Posts

Imagine the day came when you decided to escape from the boundaries of modern society in deeper pursuit of your spiritual cultivation and alchemical goals. Now imagine you could only take 3 book with you to guide you on your path for the rest of your natural life. Which would they be?

For me these are.

1. Chinese Medical Qigong Therapy by Jerry Alan Johnson

2. Taoist Yoga, Alchemy and Immortality by Lu K'uan Yu

3. How To Measure and Deepen Your Spiritual Realization by Huai-Chin Nan and William Bodri

Of all the books i've read, i feel like the combination of the three above contain everything one needs to help them succeed from a practical point of view.

What would you take with you?

1. To Be Human - Jiddu Krishnamurti

2. Awareness - Anthony Demello

3. My own training notebooks (I'm cheating because I have 3 notebooks)

I just can't get mu head around 'Taoist Yoga, Alchemy and Immortality', where do you think I'm going wrong?

My choice:

Opening The Hand of Thought - Kosho Uchiyama

The Three Pillars of Zen - Philip Kapleau

The Way of Qigong - Kenneth Cohen

The Three Pillars of Zen - Philip Kapleau

The Way of Qigong - Kenneth Cohen

Two of my favorites as well. '3 Pillars' was the first meditation book I ever read. It describes the entire process of enlightenment from the Zen perspective from a practitioners direct experiences.

The Eight Gates of Zen by John Daido Loori is also a good one if your into Zen.

For myself:

1. Kunlun by Max

2. Combat Conditioning by Matt Furey

3. Convict Conditioning 1 and 2 by Paul Wade

I'd probably pick:

The Tao Te Ching. Natch!

I Am That: the collected talks of Nisargadatta

and Pointers from Nisargadatta by Ramesh Balsekar.

Those are the most powerful books I've ever read and have helped steer me back to what I am. They're excellent to dip into in order stay there :)

+1 for Convict Conditioning

Been practicing his approach to calisthenics for a bit, great stuff. Too bad I fell of and stopped, this summer I will definitively get back on track.

I would have to have the Baguazhang Theory and Application Book by Dr. Yang Jwing Ming and Master Liang Shou Yu, because I always find something new in there. Kenneth Cohen's Way of Qigong is great, but I pretty much got that one in the head.

I suppose I would have to have Trout Fishing in America by Brautigan, though. (that book makes anywhere feel like home)

...for the third, i would choose a book identifing the edible vegetation.

Wilderness Survival Guide (includes mushroom and berry-spotting)

Something by Mark Twain (it never gets old)

TTC since I don't understand it, it won't get old either (and it apparently applies to lots of things at many levels)

1) "The Nei Kung Bible" by Gary J. Clyman

2) "T'ai Chi Classics" by Waysun Liao

3) Hmmm. A nice book about true friendship and a little cat with a happy end for all.

...preferably all main characters become Taoist Immortals in the end...including the little cat! ^_^

Reminiscences of a Stock Operator is one of my favorite books too!

It is a great read. For some reason this is the only book that I've read 4 times in a very short period of time. Fascinating story.

Nisargadatta's great, I just started reading some of his stuff again. I think I would also bring "I Am That" because I hear it's his best and I haven't read it yet. I also really like Ramana Maharshi's "Be As You Are." I would also bring a classic Taoist text like Tao Te Ching... or if I had to pick from my bookshelf I would bring Wang Liping's Ling Bao Tong Zhi Neng Nei Gong Shu in hopes that I would eventually be able to understand the teachings in it :D Lastly, I guess I would just bring my Amazon Kindle so I could order my last choice at a later date. Is that cheating?
