jade pillow

Recommended Posts

hi all , Im Sue. I came across this site while doing a search on jade pillow. Ive been having a very severe pain at the base of the head where the c-spine meets the skull for a year now. It happened suddenly after a chiropractic treatment last year when I felt a rush of energy from base of spine to head a few hrs after the treatment. Since teh next day Ive been having this severe pain at this spot. Hve seen several chiros since then and nobody seems to be able to get rid of it. Im guessing its an energy problem? Can someone pls advice, Im going crazy. thanks

Hard to say. If you say you felt energy, and it was unlike your regular body feelings, such as nerve pinching type stuff, then maybe it is an energetic blockage of some sort. I'm a bit hesitant because this localized ongoing severe pain is not so usual of energy problem. Have you tried acupuncture? Are you here because you simply want the pain to go away so you can carry on with your life, or can you comprehend that a program of stable meditation and energy practises will eventually unblock energy blockages, but also put you on higher spiritual ground?

Becalm balls

Very helpful tool, not just for pain relief but also for deep relaxation. This by itself might take care of the problem.

Gokhale method

The Gokhale method is very effective posture work. Her simple method of repositioning the shoulders so that the chest is more open is supremely effective in clearing neck pains...good to do all day long. And the other ideas in the book are really great too. Eventually the pain will vanish.

McKenzie method

The McKenzie method is something pretty easy to learn and do. The basic back and neck methods will help heal the causes of the pain. You might temporarily experience greater pain, as it "centralizes", but eventually it goes away. In combination with the other methods, there's a better effect. "Stretchlying" from the Gokhale method can relieve the centralized pain.

Foundation

The strengthening methods in this book target the precise muscle groups which allow the spine to heal itself. It works really well. Your posture will be amazing almost immediately. It is also kind of a challenging workout at first.

...

I previously had an "atlas profilax" procedure done...it was a VERY forceful massage to the back of the neck with some tool, which the practitioner didn't allow me to look at (weird!). In some places I think the method is illegal now, since it's not real Chiropractic. I do NOT recommend it.

Didn't have neck pain previously, but after that I had neck pain which lasted for over 2 years. It caused some of my subocciptial muscle to come out of the fascia...really bad damage.

Well I use all of the above methods (not in a strict way just whatever interests me and whatever feels right), and today have no more neck pain at all. That damaged muscle is now almost fully healed. Rather than just being happy with being pain-free, I seek to perfect the function of my spine and posture! It's a big key to amazing health.

Good luck.

my chi gung approach is gentle nodding while breathing into the base of skull ( physiological and psychological )

remember never do more than 70% of the motion which leads to real pain. discount mild discomfort. try to find the balance between pain and discomfort, in other words.

to begin lie on a hard surface with a rug / firm mat. pay attention to your head/neck stretching very slowly as you breathe. Feels as if you are extending the head making the neck longer and straighter. Breathe into this.

then do some standing with your spine and back of head flattening against the wall ... gently no pain.

turn the head slowly left and right slowly breathing.

nod the head. bend your head left and rght as if trying to touch your ears to your shoulders. the image that is of course you won't go past the pain point.

do this set of exercises for about 12 min total. twice a day. 10 days.

if this does not improve see a medical doctor. necks and spines are not to be trivialized.

I would strongly suggest you see a spine specialist, MD.

In rare cases, neck manipulation can cause pretty serious problems such as trauma to the vertebral artery which can lead to stroke, or fracture, especially if there is a lesion that weakens the bone.

Hopefully, it's nothing serious like that but you ought to get that checked out before too long.

Good luck.

thank you all for your kind replies. I have been meditating for years, at least 2 hrs a day. Some years ago i suddenly developed a pain in my tail bone. I had xrays and ct-scan done but nothing was wrong. Thts when a friend recommened i see a chiro [never been to one b4, and sometimes i wish i never had!]. They just cudnt get rid of it, but it suddenly vanished of its own. Almost as soon as tht disappeard i started hving pain at a spot betn the shoulder blades. And not long after that went away this pain in the occiput area started after a chiro session which was actually very gentle. I recently came across some books on taoist practice which mentions the 3 energy gates and wondered if my pain had anything to do with tht since my strange pains seem to follow tht pattern. I did an online search on it and came across this site. I wondered if there was block at the spot tht cud be causing the problem esp since I felt a sudden and v forceful gush of energy [energy, not pain] to the head b4 the problem occured. thanks again

Hi SueSu,

The progression of pain points up your spine does suggest an energetic cause though the level of pain you speak of would be unusual.

You say that you are a serious meditator doing at least two hours per day. What posture do you meditate in? I wonder if the problem could be postural with energy flow blocked by poor alignment of the spine. I would also ask if you keep the tip of the tongue on the roof of your mouth during meditation, so as to expedite the flow of energy around the microcosmic orbit (though failure to do this would usually cause problems above the points you mention).

As far as postural corrections go a good Zhan Zhuang - Standing Stake teacher would be a starting point. You will find numerous links to this practice in these forums.

You may also find the Alexander Technique a useful tool to correct postural problems.

Alexander technique

Whatever you decide on I wish you a pain free future. Good luck.

Hello Sue, sorry that you are going through the physical and mental pain described. You have received good advice above and you know your inner self enough that intuition should assist you in working through the best approach. As with myself there are several others that responded to you that have found some level of relief. I had pain that radiated from the top of my spine/base of skull into feelings which are hard to describe; like piano strings/wires pulling between my head, shoulders and upper back (ugly feeling). Well, tried Cranial Sacral work with some temporary results [human touch], massage with good results [human touch], Alexander Technique was some help, physical therapy with therapist that perform body work and council on exercise program [human touch], etc. etc. Now I go to an Acupuncture practitioner that has a Chinese masseur associate [human touch] at least twice a month. In general I have joint problems and take supplements and lite exercise to keep my body together and meditation for myself. Find you way.
