Palindromes

Recommended Posts

And now for something completely different! My other big avocation is writing palindromes (and I run this magazine, The Palindromist ). Check it out if you like that kind of thing.

My big news is, on March 16th I'll be competing in the first ever World Palindrome Championship in New York City, organized by Will Shortz, the New York Times Crossword Puzzle editor.

You're all going, right? :-)

Tao banana boat!

"I man up - punami."

Funny! You guys are dirty (don't get me started). That's amazing that you just made one up, you should post it on The Palindromist in the forums there.

I have another somewhat spiritual one, it's kind of my motto.

"Wary, alpine zen; I play raw!"

I'm also a standup comedian; here's a YouTube clip where I incorporate that and some others onstage. Not easy to do in a club full of drunks expecting dick jokes, let me tell you.

Why isn't the word palindrome one?

Because words are symbols and not the thing itself. Not a fun answer but the real one.

Hey, this palindrome discussion kind of tailed off, but I forgot to tell you, I won, and now I'm the world palindrome champion. Seriously!

Anyway, the exciting news is that I'm hosting the first ever SymmyS Awards for outstanding palindrome acheivement for 2012.

If you're in portland, northern avid judo ant, you should come! 8pm Sunday, Funhouse Lounge.

"You expect me to make dick jokes now, don't you? ... Well, I could ask most of the men in this room to line up on the stage. Would that pass as a dick joke? ...... I'd have to leave the stage though, because ... well ... SPOILER ALERT! Haha!"

Go Hang A Salami, I'm a Lasagna Hog

The guy who wrote that book, Jon Agee, is one of the competitors. And "Weird Al" Yankovic, who made that the final palindrome in his song "Bob," is one of the celebrity judges (along with Demetri Martin, comedian Jackie Kashian and John Flansburgh from

).

Look, Osho saw I was oh so kool!

What do you mean? An anagram needs at least two parts.

An anagram is the letter-set.

northernavidjudoant
aaddehijnnnoorttuv

name without spaces.
name; alphabetized.

Anagram uses only the letters in the word, name, sentence, etc.

The Tao Bums

Abe Hmo Sttu

Tut, Be As Home.

aaddehijnnnoorttuv
redundantjovianthor
diehardtrojanvonnut
hotnirvanajudotrend

Redundantjovianthor

To exemplify the redundant likenesses of various gods, between the various pantheons but without literal equivalency, for example:

Thor, associated with thunder, son of the all-father, head of the Norse Pantheon, Odin-associated with the storm, equivalent of Zeus, also associated with thunder, also known as Jove, or Jupiter, also head of the greek/roman pantheon, whereas Thor is not.

Hence the redundancy.

Redundantjovianthor.

Ah, OK, so your new name and your old name are an anagram.

Cool that "redundantjovianthor" even makes so much sense ... in itself even.

My screen name is an anagram of 'cheap' ... which is about right ... or 'peach' ... but I have to know you really well before I'll let you call me peachy.
