"Exotic" Supplement Experience

Recommended Posts

sean, maybe we should put this topic somewhere else?

Has anyone tried Shilajit? I kept seeing it in the indian markets near me but didn't pay much attention to it...

So of course, I had to google it..and I tried it...all I can say is WoW. This stuff is a total jing tonic. The effect on libido for me was far more intense than tribulus or tongkat ali(which wasn't much anyway). Curious if anyone has tried it..apparantly this one is recommended in the Kama Sutra and has a long history as a youth/strength tonic.

So I've been taking this stuff for a week, and yes - wow indeed! Besides the libido and gentle energy, my kidneys have been feeling happy and my mood has improved considerably - I didn't expect anything like this.

I also like the artistic/shamanistic idea of it - it's like the jing/essence of the earth... it's the forests of millions of years ago cultivated by the mountains, pressurised, purified, heated, cooled (natural alchemy!?) and in the summer the mountain 'bleeds' this stuff out for us to use.

Pretty cool right? I've been climbing the walls. Do you think there is a negative effect to this stuff? I wonder if it's doing anything to hormones, etc.

I've been trying it for a couple of weeks. Libido pretty good, but then it has been for a few months now.

Wish I had the patience to change one thing at a time and be scientific about it. Cos I've been adding the the green smoothies big time during the same period. Have often been feeling inexplicably good and waking up early. Damned if I really know why. Have also been drinking like a fish. Maybe that's it.

Freeform, did you order yours from the link you gave there? Did that seem a better bet than any UK suppliers? I got mine off ebay, and have no clue as to the quality.

And I've been climbing the walls a whole bunch too, Thaddeus. But no more so since trying this stuff.

Green stuff is critical..whenever I notice a downturn in energy and/or libido, it correlates with skipping the greens. Which greens are you taking? I'll either get fresh vegetable juice or some kind of wheat grass powder in pinch..

I'm doing about two litres of green smoothie maybe four days a week. Apple, banana, lemon, water, sometimes cucumber, and the green du jour. Either spinach, or watercress, or broccoli, or chard, or kale, or caballo nero, whatever that is. Using a L'Equip 228 blender like Trunk has.

Does it live up to claims that is's "the indian viagra"?

Because I'm thinking of trying it, but I dont want to have 13 hour erections. not every day, anyhow.

No. I find it's erection enhancing effect to be subtle. Korean ginseng extract or gingko biloba are far more powerful and immediate.

Funny, cat, from your posts I assumed you were female...

I bought mine off ebay too - from a detox guy in spain - I think he capsules it himself - apparently he buys it direct from nepal or somewhere where it's processed naturally with raw milk - maybe you got it from the same dude?

Yeah I keep getting boners all over the place :unsure: - really annoying actually - I thought excersise would improve matters, but it's actually made things worse.

I've been reading about fulvic acid - which is the main constituent of Shilajit - it allows cells to absorb nutrients far more efficiently (it also allows cells to release toxins and uneeded nutrients)... So it's quite possible that taking this stuff along with smoothies and other nutrients makes em more effective...

Man! Is this just a guy tonic thing? Because it sounds cool and I wanna try. <_<

Well - when I was researching, I read it's a great tonic for both men and women (including its effect on the libido). To be honest I wouldn't be taking it if the only effect was inapropriate hardons - I've really noticed an improvement in my mood and energy in a kind of grounded way - like Ian, I seem to be waking up early with a smile on my face (and a tent on my bed <_< ) - I've also felt a detox effect with it, especially in the bowels... I think it also gets oxygen into cells more efficiently, because the oxygen supplements I have, have been having a more immediate, pronounced effect...

This is a great discovery - thanks Thaddeus! :D

Ian/Freeform - do you know the seller on ebay? I searched there and nothing turned up.

Yup - just had a look and the guy I bought it from didn't have any more on sale - but the one I bought was here

you could try contacting the guy...

Next time I might place a bulk order with the place darebak got his from... (although I'd have to capsule them myself)

What's the raw stuff like? I bought what I thought was raw stuff (fairly cheap btw) but when I opened the bottle it was hardened (like coal). So I thought perhaps it was bad, and there was no way to really get it out without breaking the glass. But if this stuff needs to be 'powdered' then maybe it was ok?

I think when it's 'harvested' it basically comes as oozing gunk that hardens... Most of the ones I've seen have been processed somehow, maybe you got the unprocessed stuff? Have a look at the link I put up for cat - there is a picture of the stuff on a plate and there are a few big coal-like chunks on there. It's probably a good idea to powder it before consumption - would digest better for sure.

Interesting article: http://www.botanical.com/site/column_poudh...1_shilajit.html

Excerpt: There are several methods to identify the true Shilajit, honorable Baba told us. The true Shilajit smells like cow urine (Go-Mutra). When it is kept on fire, it produces no fumes. When burnt, it gives bright flame. It is soluble in cow milk.

And: Honourable Barfani Baba also informed us about the method used to purify the Shilajit collected from natural conditions. Although many healers and Pharmaceutical companies use it without purifying it but Baba warned that it can cause side effects, if it is used impure. For purification, it is dissolved in cow milk. When the dust particles settle in bottom, the solution is filtered in other vessel with the help of muslin cloth. After filtrations, the solution is kept under the sun and by drying milk, pure Shilajit is collected and used in treatment.

On another note, I bought raw honey the other day..how much propolis is in it?

Hey, T,

There's all kinds of good things in raw honey, such as pollen particles, beeswax particles, nutrients and such. But I don't think it likely there'd be a whole lot of propolis, perhaps trace. The propolis really is the glue that holds the hive together. The bees stick the hive boxes together, the frames together, the lids to the box, and so on. Each time you go into the hive you have to use this little mini pry bar to crack everything apart again.

Anyone have further input on shilajit (or moomiyo)?

Sure. :)

The best moomiyo comes from Altai;

shilajit is somewhat less potent;

the chemical composition of the real thing is incredibly complex (half the periodic table);

you take it with a warm fatty liquid (milk if you have access to real milk, or else soymilk, broth, or warm water with a tad of oil or ghee mixed in);

if it comes in tablets (like the Altai variety), crush them and dissolve in the above mentioned liquid, don't swallow them whole;

as a general tonic, it is useful to combine with exercise and any type of strenuous physical activity;

but its first and foremost application is for healing broken bones, also for other types of physical trauma;

its bone-mending properties are nothing short of miraculous;

side effects are rare if you use it for a short period of time (continuously for up to one month or in on-off cycles for some three months -- three weeks on, one week off);

in people who use it continuously (for many months or even years) for energy boost, serious side effects that have been reported are typically psychological and even psychiatric;

all in all, with prudent as-needed use, it is one of the safest and most efficient medicines known to man, and there's even an Arab (?) proverb that goes something like, "Allah gives life, moomiyo saves it."

Anyone have further input on shilajit (or moomiyo)?

Been taking it for almost a year now. It's VERY good stuff: I found it strengthens me in a subliminal (i.e. not stimulating) yet entirely noticeable way. Its the only supplement that I've found keeps returning its benefits in the long run. After taking it for a while you just feel this sense of solidity. I can't explain it any more than that. It's just as if you feel like there is nothing that is going to throw you off balance and that you'll always be able to bounce back. I'm classed as high vata, so this is exactly what I need to keep balanced. "Shilajit" means "destroyer of weakness" so that is very apt and certainty my experience!

As some one else has suggested, quite a few will need to take it with milk with some honey in it. When I first started it over heated my stomach and liver with the result I got this cavernous feeling in the stomach, very thirsty, headaches and dry eyes. The problem was I was taking it with water; took it with milk and honey and the problem went away very quickly. Now however my system can take it without milk.

As with most ayurvedic herbs, I'd recommend using triphala first to cleanse and tone the digestive system so that you can maximize the uptake of the shilajit.

Interesting bit of trivia: there's this Australian scientist who has a website in which he tries to prove shilajit is animal excrement. Seriously arrogant guy. As if the Indians, after taking it for thousands of years, would have not realised this if it were true. Again, another westerner thinking he needs to bring reason and enlightenment to "superstitious" backwards Easterners. Sort of like the case with acupuncture....

shi[laji]t ... hmmmm :lol:

But seriously, from the sound of it I am tempted to try it, but on the other hand, I have tried so many substances said to be super-healthy, and it didn't have a noticeable effect. Maybe my body can't absorb all the good stuff, maybe I am already rich in nutrients and my sub-optimum health results from other causes. Can anybody compare the effect of shilajit with that of other potent substances?

For example, I drank Noni juice for some time and noticed no improvement whatsoever. And currently I take Chlorella and Spirulina and am not sure whether they do anything.

Kefir seems to have the most noticeable effect so far, making the skin very soft and helping digestion.

It just seems a lot of trouble finding authentic, properly treated shilajit. Does it differ in appearance before and after purification?

Do you think this here has been purified to avoiding side-effects?:
