Immortals (Xian Shi)

Recommended Posts

On various posts I have explained that I am the student of a traditional Shaman, my Master is the student of Huang Lao Xian Shi (Old Yellow Immortal Master). If there are any Chinese members on this forum they may know of the Immortal Master. The history of Huang Lao is that he was a shaman and lived around 125 AD. He was a famous exorcist, swordsman, healer and martial artist. His temples are not really found in China itself (probably destroyed during the cultural revolution), but are found in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and wherever Chinese people have settled. He is sometimes linked with the Monkey God and Lao Tzu. Having received the teachings from Master Tong, he taught me Huang Lao's sword form and various other things, I have not heard from Master Tong for some time, as I am so to speak, 'come down the mountain'. To a lot of native Chinese these things are common, but to western people its seems extraordinary.

The pursuit of spiritual Immortality and belief in Immortals and spirits is so strongly intertwined with all sorts of Daoist practices that this subject I feel should not be ignored. So without any rude or stupid replies please, (the Immortals may be looking!!!) I would be most interested in your thoughts on the whole subject in and around it and would like to hear from anyone who believes in any other Immortals.

Marblehead need not reply due to his blood pressure!!!!wink.gif

Well...!!! I would like to be as objective as I can be.

Once the Taoists thought they want to be in good health for longevity and become a 真人(real person). A "real person" was an esoteric term for Taoists which means an immortal or getting close to be one.

I guess no immortal had ever been existed. However, general speaking IMO, one may be considered that a person who have been living more than one hundred years old may be considered as an immortal.

Of course I believe that immortals exist, and that we cultivators here also have a shot at becoming immortal. Wha you think, Im doing all this stuff to relax, be a happy person or to fit in with mundane society better? Yes the immortals are looking (hi, by the way) , and the Tao is apprehending what we write and what we think.

I agree... I think the body-spirit is immortal. When the three treasures are transformed (or transported) back to the spiritual source then one completes the immortality [early] in this life.

i believe in immortals, and extreme longevity. i don't have very much to add right now, except to say that.

i transmute excess jing upward to the reservoir of vital energy (dantien at the navel). i infuse this charged chi with shen from the heart chakra, and shen from the whole luminous field. i mix the 3 essences and infuse my dantien with cosmic energy through my belly button using "cosmic umbilical cord" practice, drawing in the light of universal love and cosmic spirit. i circulate this energy through the small orbit and let it infuse all my organs. does anyone have any commentary on this practice? i am always looking to evolve my practices. i hope that i am blessed with long life. lonnnnng life :).

Here is one of many interesting things that I experienced Back in the early 1980's.

I was in South Korea with my Master, we visited many Buddhist temples there. We came across by chance a temple that was devoted to a lot of Daoist Immortals. Master tong said to me, "I was once visited by this Immortal here who taught me some Dragon martial art. It was a long time ago, I could beg him to come and ask him to show you his art! Shall I try?" So he went into the middle of the temple hall, prayed and then stood for some time, until suddenly he was off, displaying this beautiful Dragon martial art, Master Tong was gone but a Dragon had taken over his body it would seem, because he moved so powerfully, so like how one would think a dragon would move, so fluidly like a Dragon, that I didn't feel a human was there!

The Immortal who came was Lu Ren Xian Shi, famous for his Dragon martial art.smile.gif

That is interesting becouse one of the Hindu Immortals is Hannuman the Monkey God.

OK thanks ,I was just wondering about possible connections between similar beliefs in this case between India and China, as there are some obvious similarities and touching points.

Dont know why are you rolling your eyes? What was this trying to convey?

Anyway interseting topic and I am looking forward to hopefully moore people chiming in.

I don't think there is any connection, although the Monkey God in the story escorted the Buddhist monk to India and back to China with Buddhist scriptures. Rolly eyes are just happy!!smile.gif

Hi Suninmyeyes,

thanks for the link, but I think they've got their information wrong. If you look at wikipedia under both Sun Wu Kong and Hannuman, they are completely different.smile.gif

Yes, OTP, you are right. Sun Wu Kong was not a deity of the Chinese. He was only a character in a fiction story which created by the author.

Haha yes they are different of course ,with different names, what I am saying that as with many gods and beliefs ,they often develop from the same source and spread. There obvioulsy is a similarity .That is my point.

I am not that interested to be honest ,just making my self clear..

I respect you disagreeing too, whichever way.

Anyone wants to talk about immortals?

(sorry for swaying off the thread a bit)

I'll tell you another of my experiences which you will probably not agree with?

A young woman in Malaysia, believed in the Monkey God (Chi Tien Da Shun), she went to pray very often and burned incense at the local temple devoted to him. One evening she was walking back home and passed down a small alley. Five men appeared and surrounded her, she feared for her safety. The men started to grab her, she begged for help from Sun Wu Kong. She then lost consciousnesses and went into a trance, When she awoke from her trance she was standing in the alley still, all five men were laid out badly beaten up! Sun Wu Kong had come to her rescue! smile.gif

Nice to see you back on the forums.

Yeah.

I suppose if you're a religious Taoist its part and parcel of the religion to acknowledge and celebrate the immortals. I believe there's truth to the legends, if not they make for colorful archetypes.

There seems to be a couple of categories of Immortals mentioned in the texts. Just keeping your souls and consciousness intact gives you a low rung on the immortality scale. Though not necessarily a happy one.

Still thats the low lying fruit. Kan & Li practices, mastery of dream practices seem to be outlets for attaining it..maybe.
