where to get training flail

Recommended Posts

does any one know where to buy a training flail? that bundle of bamboo or metal that is used to strike the body for iron body training. what are it's other names?

is there a good shop online that ships internationally?

or is there a good way to improvise it? I know of a cloth bag filled with mung beans.

thanks.

Bean bag is good.

After a couple of years, substitute beans with gravel. Another couple of years down the road, ditch the gravel for ball bearings. This article recommends something similar - http://www.livestrong.com/article/411071-kung-fu-iron-techniques/

A neighbor from years back used to train with bamboo rods coated with resin which he then smothers with sand and then left to dry. Over time he would go from fine grade to coarse grade silica. Every evening he or his unwilling brother would use this as a flagellation tool. He even entertained the silly idea of one day using fine, powdered glass instead, and work up from there. His poor mother thought he had gone pure nutty nutz. :)

Seems like any hardware store would have long thin wooden rods. Buy 5 or 6; tie or glue the bottom third together, figure out how to put a small round piece somewhere in the middle so the end flares out and wallah. Fast and Cheap. Don't how to keep the separator in the middle but there are probably a number of solutions. A simple ball inside might stay in, maybe just sticking a super ball in the middle would give it some heft and springiness.

If they sold bamboo, you could get a thick piece and just make some long notches in it yourself. That might nicely too.

Good flailing to you :)

I recently got it (healthbroom) and tried it out but for me I felt there was an insufficiency. It's thin wires are a bit too thick, too few and spaced in a circle formation rather than a cluster so the striking felt too rigid. I think I will try thelerner's recommendation to get a lot of 20+ gauge wires and try them.

The other option is more expensive but doesn't look any better: 41J14R46J2L._SS500_.jpg

both items strike me as being low quality mass produced paraphernalia.

:) I wish I knew it's chinese name or a different western name for it but for now it might be confused with the medieval weapon.

the cheapest and most convenient I found so far was landscaping place markers (flags), they come in bundles for less than 10 dollars and I tried it and it was less rigid. the wire thickness is almost the same.

Flag size is: 4"x5" with 21" wire stake. Sold 100 per bundle. Price: $6.94

Never thought of using wood, in my hung gar school we use metal rods taped together. Start light and work your way to harder hits.

If you want to start with bamboo you might try the mutlirod drumsticks:

I wish I knew it's chinese name

I found this nice thread talking about it. http://forum.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62421

hitting the body is called Pai Da Gung. https://encrypted.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=Pai+Da+Gung

here are some quotes from the thread:

"Internal Iron Body uses lots of twisting exercises that help to strengthen and thicken the fascia of the body.

Advanced exercises are used to condition the tissues and the bones.

There is both Pai Da Gung which is basically beating the body to thicken tissues, and desensitize the body.

Then there is internal Iron Body which does not use hitting the body but focuses on training the fascia through twisting and moving the body through certain routes of motion.

Both will get you to the same destination but will be different in appearance. "

"There is also "Shi Swei Jing" which combines certain "intention based" preparation methods, warm up massages and direct utilizization of weighted increments to train deep layer connective tissue for cohesive strength. A beating sequence, specific to meridian structures in the body follows, usually done with an iron flail but on occasion in early stages with a bamboo flail when the practioner is not yet strong enough.

And yes, it works.

and I tried it and it was less rigid.

after some thought maybe the rigid is for reaching muscles and deeper tissues whereas less rigid would be more like a whip not as deep reaching whch could be useful for more sensitive areas or use wood or plastic for them.
