Blog and system structure

Recommended Posts

It is true. I cannot find any peace. I think the system structure is growing magnificently. Now we need to integrate the various instruments, and decide, observe, what get's cooked and where.

Wiki and forum are not in competition but are relatively complementary. With forum fast cooking some material and wiki slow coking and cristalising solutions.

I think we need a last element (good thing the lending library, I suspect it might not be really useful for us poor europeans, but still locally is a great idea). But what's more, we now have 3 people who have strated describing their practice and I know others are thinking of adding their experience too (I for one).

I think that both forum and wiki are not the right tool to have blogs. Maybe wiki are slightly better (as wiki give extra tools), but essentially is always better to have a tool that has been developed just for a job, to do that particular job. So I think that as a last step in setting up the stage we should now install a blog.

There are a number of blogs around. A good comparison can be found here. Most of those software perimt to have MANY blogs from MANY authors on the same site. That is EXACTLY what we need. Then different practttioners can keep their blog over here.

Once we have that too I think we can finally relax structure wise, and start to work on the content.

Just my thoughts, and looking for yours,

Pietro

:D No worries Pietro. You're restlesslness and the feedback it produces is most welcome here.

This is a common complaint on forum software forums. I imagine eventually forum software creators will figure out elegant solutions for integrating wikis and forums.

I agree. We need a blog setup. And I think the best one I've found so far, when it comes to a site wanting to provide both blog and forum, is the blog add-on to Invision Power Board. Not to mention that IPB is one of the slickest pieces of forum software around; check out the feature list:

http://www.invisionboard.com/?features

(Notice it has a threaded feature. It's built in and very quick as opposed to the threaded view on this forum which is a mod, slow and I'm afraid a bit buggy.)

And you can see the blog add-on in action here:

http://www.lioncity.net/buddhism/index.php?

Just click on "Blogs" in the top menu to the right.

(You can also check out the gallery feature which let's users have gallery pages)

The great thing is that all the posts in this phpBB forum can be converted to IPB very easily. The only downside is that IPB costs $200 and the blog add-on is another $50. So I'll have wait to save a little cash. Maybe I'll start a Paypal donation fund for moving to IPB. Right now I'm also working on integrating Google ads into this forum to try to generate a little income for the move to IPB.

I agree we should have a file library of opensource or personal texts by members.

I'll work on this. When we make the probable move to IPB it will support file attachments in your posts so you can upload attachments directly to the taobums server. In the meantime you can link to remotely hosted attachments in your threads here. For example, you could upload a file to your own webhost and then include a link to it in your post.

The problem with an open fileserver at this point though is that I only have so much disk space/bandwidth on my hosted server here. Also a fileserver requires constant moderation because, to Ron's dismay, I don't want to start a porn-ring.

Sean.
