"Who do you pray to when your playing Craps?"

Recommended Posts

Ok.

was reading this site...someone in the office saw it and said...

"They dont believe in God? Well who do they pray to when they are playing Craps?"

I just found that little nugget too good to not share.

That is all.

I don't play Craps, but if I did, I would resort to taoist talismanic magic and perform the Five Ghosts Transfer Wealth ceremony.

I hope this will help your co-workers understand that being a taoist doesn't mean being deprived and all out of luck vis a vis supernatural aid in gambling.:D

"They don't believe in God", is more or less a stereo-type as far as some forms of Taoism go,

see the quote below:

"Yuan-shih T'ien-tsun -- The First Principal

He has no beginning and no end. He existed "before the void and the silence,

before primordial chaos." He is self-existing, changeless, limitless, invisible,

contains all virtues, is present in all places and is the source of all truth".

Thus your fellow worker may have been thinking more along the lines of Buddhism

as far as a "God" goes. (with a capital G) Btw, several forms of Buddhism do pray for help

from the "gods" or "goddess" whom they greatly respect, although not as a supreme God.

I guess what was the most humorous to me was that he was not concerned with "Well how do you get to heaven" or even "who do you pray when things are just really hard" or anything like that I have heard...it was playing craps...and he was serious. THAT is what popped into his mind.

Hehehe. Yeah, that was funny.

But it is true, Religious Taoists have many gods as well as do some Buddhists, as 3bob pointed out.

Maybe Ralis will see this and respond. He is a gambler.

Actually, I have tried mantras and felt a negativity against me. Difficult to explain what that is. Maybe it has something to do with self reliance as opposed to giving myself away to a parent deity.

I played craps for years before I became involved with poker. Usually, I was able to win at a very consistent rate. I can provide some tips on how to play and win at craps for anyone interested.

BTW, the so called house edge is not some mathematical absolute. It only applies to certain styles of play.

Based on what I know of you your last sentence is probably very valid.

I always felt deities had some other agenda. Not my agenda.

I thought Vajraji might chime in here. He thinks I am some degenerate poker player.

I'd be interested.

I can't count cards, too much mental work for me. I'm not bad at starting hands in hold 'em but I get slack working out proper pot odds given the flops. I often wished I could afford a bankroll to have a proper go, but given my maths skills its probably good that I can't :)

p.s. When the chips are really down I pray to God. It's my native culture and in a crunch anything is worth a shot

Forget about counting cards in Blackjack. With the house rules, it is difficult to make money. Further, the bankroll variance is no fun.

The bankroll variance in poker is no fun either. Especially in no limit Texas Hold-Em. Recently, I just play poker for fun.

The best casino game is Baccarat which offers better odds than craps. Baccarat is a game where one can follow the overall trend and make good money. No math is required and neither is a large bankroll. Intuitive skills are a great advantage.

BTW, craps is the second best casino game.

Not unless you practice dice throwing skills. Craps is one, if not the only game the authorities let you "deal, the cards" so to speak. There are dice sets and throwing techniques that can influence the game in your favor. Of course, you can politely be "asked" to not play the game anymore. Happened to me more than once.

I learned dice throwing skills 15 years ago and if I can find the zone, I can hold the dice for up to 45 minutes.

Where were you banned?

Where I play you cannot set the dice, I normally place the 6 and 8 and full press every second hit, after things heat up a bit I also place the 5 and 9.

An Indian casino in northern Michigan. Wasn't really "banned", I was just told that "perhaps you may want to play another game for a while" while two rather large security personnel stood at my sides.

This is what happened the other time. If I set the dice and threw in a controlled manner, the dealer would yell "no roll!" and would warn me that any thing other than feeding the chickens and both dice hitting the back wall is not acceptable and I will not be allowed to roll. I promptly colored up, cashed out and left.

My favorite way to start play at a table is to place the 6 and 8 for a double unit, a $5 table that would be $12 each. When either hits, you win $14 and take both bets down a unit. That way you are only risking $12 and you already won $14. If you lose 3 times, move to a different table or take a break for a while.

If the table is hot, or there is a good shooter, I will place a double unit on the 5,6 and 8 and a single unit in the field. That way I will win on any number other than 7. If I'm up a bit, I'll play the hard ways too.

That casino is harsh! Most casino's in Vegas don't care as long as the dice hit the back wall. There is a casino north of Santa Fe where I play sometimes and there is absolutely no heat.
