Download "Measuring Meditation"

Recommended Posts

Taking direction from Drew Hempels generous offering of Taoist Yoga: Alchemy and Immortality, I've decided to upload and share Huai-Chin Nan and William Bodri's Measuring Meditation: How to Measure and Deepen Your Spiritual Realization ... I was rather skeptical at first, given that these two are also selling a manual teaching you how to meditate for clear skin... but I must say I've come away really impressed with the 705 pg epic they've constructed. Anyway, without further ado..

..but you are being generous with someone else's property.

Yes.

I debated about whether or not I should make this available to other taobums... it's a phenomenal resource and the result of an obvious labor of love on behalf of the two authors, which makes slighting them a difficult prospect for me.. but it's also for those same reasons that I feel it's so important to share.. The information contained within has struck me as invaluable and I felt that many of the good people on this forum could derive great benefit from it.. Also, at 97.00, I felt that many might second guess taking the plunge themselves.. I suppose the middle ground within this scenario would be to deactivate the link (as I have an account with megaupload) after seven days. I'm sorry if you disagree with the decision, but my aim here is only to add some more water to the taobum communal information trough.. At least briefly.

I look at it as a group buy.

If I bought a great softcover book, I would share it freely with my friends. I wouldn't keep it on my bookshelf and tell them to go buy their own copy. What makes an ebook different? It should actually be worth less.

For those who are willing to pay close to 100 dollars for a book, then it's good to purchase it and support the authors.

Thanks to balance for putting his morality on the line and sharing/helping everyone here!

I think any online book becomes "free" a few months after release.

Wow, what convenient beliefs! It's not "free", and it's one thing if you share it with one other, if you are posting it publicly for all to see, it's piracy, bro. That is intellectual property. Are your ethics and integrity always so fluid? You should be asking the authors permission to use their material.

An actual book can be lent to friends. An ebook is vulnerable to being ripped off because of the actual medium. It's not a group buy, Scotty. You're just telling yourself that to feel better about ripping them off. An analogy is if you just printed out the book yourself and gave them away to everybody. If the authors wish to charge $98 for their material, that's their choice.

If they knew that it was being posted here, do you think that would be ok with them?

Even if we can do it, you have to admit it is not cool.

Drew, if you write a book someday, do you want it stolen from you?

It is definitely not cool! There is a copyright in the book and a statement that the book is not to be reproduced in any manner without the written permission of the author!

I can't believe you guys are rationalizing this and then helping yourselves. Think it through. C'mon, you know it's wrong. Are you guys always so mushy in your integrity?

This is illegal, and it needs to come down. Same thing for harry.eldridge's books that he ripped off, put them up here, and then acted like he was a hero.

If you want to negotiate a "group buy", here is the email of the publisher/author:

Well it's an interesting topic to be sure.

Personally I'm always "anti-copyright."

So yeah I have written books already -- I always have them as "full free preview" so they can be read free online.

That's my latest book -- enjoy! 175 pages or so. I have tons of written material online all for free reading -- articles, books, etc.

Personally I always thought piracy was if someone else was trying to make money off of someone else's product.

But if it's free circulation then I don't see that as piracy. That's my personal view.

Obviously if people don't think there should be links to sites that have free downloads then they should complain to the website moderators who can take it to the administrator, etc. Then it could be made policy so people know otherwise.

I've never used torrents or anything because personally I don't like the idea of having to register for something since they're could always be some sort of catch to it where they try to make money off of it.

OK, theft then. You are depriving the author to be compensated for his work. Do you really think he wouldn't mind? He's actually got a web-based business for his writing. It's not cool to distribute it, and it is also illegal. I would love to have that book as much as anyone else, but putting it out there for the taking is just plain wrong.

If I wrote a book on the path, I would not be concerned with making money. I'd write it for people who were seeking real info, and would hope that those who are going to put it to good use are going to get their hands on it in any way possible. Why else write a spiritual book?

I suspect the authors have similar intentions, having read the return policy on the site.

An actual book can be lent to friends.

I will do the same with any ebook I own...especially one priced so high (even if it's worth it, and even if the authors deserve the money for their hard work).

Buddha said not to take something that doesn't belong to you. I'm not sure whether that includes ebooks as well.

On the other side an author like Paulo Coelho actually makes more money due to piracy because then his works get known and so act as a free advertisement.

This is not really black and white. I can understand those who are against copyright infringement and also those who are for.

I think sharing it privately with a few others is fine, like you do for a regular book. But posting it publicly for all-comers is not. Again, the author probably wouldn't mind if you shared it privately, pitching it up publicly on the internet is a big difference.

In the eyes of the law, it remains illegal to post it without written permission, so it is black and white. Again, why not ask the author? Just because the content is digitalized, does not mean it ceases to be intellectual property.

Here's a fascinating discussion on distribution issues.

Copyright is most famously focused on music -- I was influenced by Jacques Attali's book "The Political Economy of Music" -- he was Mitterand's advisor in France....

Anyway he is in this discussion here -- I'm just listening to it now.

So Attali says that the "content" should be free but the distribution is not free because of advertising. Of course advertising is tax-deductible for corporations.

So that does seem to be the main model -- and advertising IS paid for by the public since it's a tax deduction made up by the public taxes -- corporate welfare.

Again it's a fascinating issue.

So then they talk about CHINA - ironically (Taoism) -- saying that the musicians in China assume that there will be free distribution of content but the money is made from the personal appearances.

Attali makes the same distinction that I made -- piracy is someone trying to SELL something whereas free distribution is not piracy.

Anyway Attali argues in his book that music PREDICTS how the rest of society will be structured. It's a fascinating book written in the 1980s -- of course my focus is on music as the model for Taoism, etc.

Guys pulling back onto the book. How much can one really learn from 700+ pages of material. I am always quick to right off anything over 200 pages as it most likely is fluff and long drawn out points that neglect brevity. When it comes to digesting all of this material what do you have left? A shit ton of knowledge that as we know does not help you. Like I want to know the benefits of plowing through 700+ pages of meditation information as opposed to just telling someone to sit down, close your eyes, focus on your in breath and out breath.

You should read Chinese Medical Qigong Therapy by Jerry Alan Johnson.

That brick is about 1000 pages, but it's full of double rainbow goodness.

Ah well then there's the really fascinating issue of

SELF-CENSORSHIP.

Chomsky talks about self-censorship a lot.

I mean if you want to self-censor the book that's cool as well.

My dad would give me all his far-right wing books to read but then he would never read the Chomsky books I gave him! haha.

Giving authors their due for all the work they've done is going to be one of the biggest issues in the next few years as e-book readers become ubiquitous, and you can forsee every university student could download all their texts from file sharing networks, while the writers will lose incentive to write.

I spent months reading and re-reading Bodri and Nan's book and it turned me from someone who just knows about yoga and few other things, to a spiritual cultivator with a grasp of where I am going and how to get there, so full of information that I had never seen or dared to believe before. To me it remains the most important and pivotal book I have read, as it happened concurrently with my Kundalini becoming active. That was extra fortunate to have a roadmap. 100 bucks is laughably cheap, and to pretend otherwise is ignorance. But then again, I have sent to my friend who probably got nothing out of it

If you read his blogs, you will see he spends lots of money on getting other never before published cultivation works translated that he wont make a dime on. Who else in the English speaking world does this? I think it would be fair that if you downloaded the book and got value from it, then please make a donation. Whatever, its your karma.

So I went to http://meditationexpert.com clicked on blog and then typed translation in the search engine and got this:

http://www.meditationexpert.com/blog/?s=translation

Bodri gives the link of someone else who has a website of free translations they've done. Very cool.

Thanks.

Ah here's what you were referring to:

http://www.meditationexpert.com/blog/2008/04/making-wise-donations/

I’ve used translators, helped coordinate translation efforts or made donations for the translation of all sorts of spiritual books — Buddhist, Taoist, Hindu and so forth. So I know how difficult it is to get things translated.

Yikes.

I hadn't at all thought that my pebble of a post would've caused such ripples.

I am sorry to those that found this effort of mine to be appalling, but I maintain that I had the best of intentions (those famous last words), and thought that releasing this fish into the taobum pool would help out a great many here. I hardly liken what I've done to uploading it as torrent or onto some other anonymous, mass download site. Sure. Everything is connected.. but it was my feeling that a seven day revolution within the relatively isolated waters of this forum would hardly ensure its invasive spread across the web.. And hopefully, those as grateful for the book as I would've felt the mounting of compassion necessary to offer up at least a minor modicum of fiscal gratitude to the authors.

Again, I apologize to those whose moral toes I may have stepped on.
