Brain mapping, orgasms, and taoists, oh my!

Well, although I am not into porn or any of that other stuff I do agree with the basics of the article. I too believe that our brains continue to develop throughout our entire lifetime as long as we stay healty in body and mind.

I really liked their saying..."neurons that fire together, stay together." so much of what we do in meditation and tai chi is deconstructing hard wired sympathetic responses and hard wiring new parasympathetic ones...once that happens, conditioned responses weaken and we can actually react to our environment. :)

Welcome indeed. Interesting article. I like to try and go against conditioned responses actively. I do meditate though and it probably helps lots. Its called not doing. ^_^

Exactly. If we react the same way to similar conditions we actually are establishing something close to an instinct. And I think that this is not good.

Yep. Lao Tzu told us to unlearn all the crap we learned through the years and relearn through observation. This way we understand why it is best to do a certain thing based on certain conditions.

Hi Aria, Yes, I too believe that meditation helps in this matter. When we empty our mind there is room for new understandings.

sometimes developing instincts are good. Particularly if in the context of performance based activities. However I'm willing to bet that true "masters" of an activity know which of their actions are instinctual and thus are able to deftly alter there actions based on the circumstances.

Hi Elmer,

Yeah, I do agree with you in this regard. In my 'real life' I have routine tasks that are perfomed daily. If I have a set procedure for performing these tasks it is less likely that I will make mistakes.

But I do believe that these 'habits' that we establish in our life should be based on sound knowledge and we remain very aware that these are 'habits' so that we can consciously alter them whenever needed.

Peace & Love!
