Antioxidant and pesticide content in common foods.

Lately I am trying to simplify my diet, by focusing on foods that deliver the most bang for the buck nutritionally. Most of the foods that have high orac scores (antioxidant capacity) also have other documented health benefits. I recommend searching for them on http://www.sciencedaily.com and reading up on studies done. Blueberries, spinach, chocolate, green tea, and turmeric stick out in my mind. You may also want to read up on health/nutrition news on http://www.mercola.com

Everything is give and take. Moderation and balance is always suggested for good reason.

 

Some of the apparently best foods...such as chocolate, berries and spinach...have high oxalate content. Check this website:

So don't believe all of the nutrition advice you hear, even if it's from highly qualified nutritionists. Listen to your body. If you feel normal, then you're doing okay. If you feel odd in any way, then something is off.

 

We need to consume both "good" and "bad" things in order to be healthy. For instance, having olive oil (good) as well as saturated fats in meat (bad). Just because something is "good" doesn't mean it's always good, and just because something is "bad" doesn't mean you should reject it completely from your diet. If we only have unsaturated fats in our diet, our cell membranes will be too pourous and it'll increase our risk of cancer.

 

Funny, huh?

 

About antioxidants...the liver produces glutathione naturally, which if I remember correctly is the most powerful antioxidant. We are designed to self heal. So my view is that we should eat things which help the liver do this. I think a big key is having n-acetyl cysteine, and l-glutamine in our food.

 

I came up with a mixture of foods which can help this greatly... yogurt, papaya (or kiwi), cod liver oil and sunflower seeds.

Interesting how high a lot of spices are in ORAC value... B)

 

And don't forget sprouts, chia seeds or pinole (chia seeds mixed with other herbs to form a more complete protein). ($18/lb here)

I totally agree with you Scott: even though I mainly buy organic food, I think it's also good to have "bad" things sometimes. It's how our world is, and it's good remember yourself about it.

But do it sensible, as Scott suggested, listen your body and how do you feel.

I spend a large amount of time researching things, its my addiction. Each day I read sites like http://www.sciencedaily.com/ http://www.physorg.com/ reddit.com. The things I find interesting I post here for those who might like them. You don't have to take my information as scripture, I just thought people would like to know which foods have the highest levels of pesticides, so they knew which to buy organic, and which foods had the highest levels of antioxidants so they could prioritize food choices.

Another super-antioxidant is seanol.

These molecules beat the free-radical scavenging ability of most polyphenols by 10-100 times. That means they far outshine even the extremely powerful green tea catechins.The name “Seanol” comes from the source of the compounds — the sea. We find these compounds in several red and brown algae, in particular cava Ecklonia. This seaweed grows at a depth of about 100 feet.

 

This fact gives Seanol another major difference from the other polyphenols. Virtually all polyphenols from land sources are water-soluble. Water-soluble polyphenols have a short half-life in your body. Water-soluble compounds also have less ability to penetrate your blood brain barrier. Seanol compounds are 40% fat-soluble. This means they have a greater ability to get into your brain and protect it.

 

Like fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A and D), it also means a much longer half-life in your body. The half-life of Seanol compounds is up to 12 hours compared to 30 minutes for water-soluble polyphenols.

Seanol is a purified, high potency extract of Ecklonia cava, a marine brown algae that grows in the seas off the cost of Japan and Korea. Unlike most all of the land based, hydrophylic (water-soluble) polyphenols, including catechins and EGCG from green tea extract, antioxidants from bilberry and blueberry, grape seed extracts, resveratrol, and pygnogenol from bark of French pine, Seanol is hydrophobic (not soluble in water) and the most important - lipophylic-(fat soluble).

 

This gives the Seanol the unique ability to be easily absorbed by the all types of human cells, it can be concentrated in them, even go through blood-brain barrier, helping to protect and improve memory, cognitive function and mental clarity.

 

In addition, the lipophylic properties of the Seanol allow it to remain in the body up to 12 hours, in contrast to the very short half-life of the hydrophilic (water soluble) land-based polyphenol sources.

 

The ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbence Capacity) score for antioxidation potential (8300) of Seanol is much, much higher than most land-based polyphenols, including resveratrol.

 

Strong scientific data (14 years of animal, in-vitro, in-vivo and human clinical studies ) show that Seanol has been proven to provide:

 

Strong antioxidant scavenging of lipids and cholesterol, free radicals in the cardiovascular system, reducing the risk of stroke, MI, vasculitis.

 

Strong anti-plasmin inhibition effect, making blood thinner and normalizing blood flow, lowering high blood pressure and preventing blood clots.

 

Significant anti-inflammatory effect, that helps with prevention and alleviation of degenerative arthritis, vasculitis, MS, neuropathy.

 

Significant analgesic effect by inhibiting COX enzymes, this will benefit all Fibromyalgia, patients, also patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

 

Seanol will be effective in weight management programs due to its ability to down-regulation (60%) of specific enzyme responsible for fat-lipids metabolism.

 

Depending on the therapeutic application examined, Seanol's in-vivo potency tends to be from 100 to 1000 times more than a similar quality of the land-based polyphenols, resulting from its higher antioxidant potential and much greater bio-availability - due to fat soluble properties.

You are fooling yourself if you think some foods are okay because they are lower in pesticides.

Best way to go all organic is to write down everything you want to buy, then shop around at competing grocery stores.

 

There's also preservatives to think about, among every other food additive. Basically google everything in the ingredients list. Don't eat anything refined like flour, sugar, salt or canned veggies.

 

Then i hear there's high and low enzyme content food, eating seasonally, food combining, ph levels in the body, the containers you hold and cook your food in, the health of the animal the food comes from if you aren't vegan.

 

And then there is water, which is a whole nother ballgame.

 

Once you start cutting out everything that is bad for you for a while, your body will never agree with it again. i feel terrible every time i go to taco bell now. Your emotions towards the chemicals you know are in it start negatively affecting you as well. i just stay away from crap entirely because i know if i go to that hotdog stand downtown i can be prepared to have my teeth hurt, my stomach hurt, get horrible shits, and be consuming things that hurt just about every organ in my body. Once you develop sensitivity there is no going back. It disgusts me the things the food industry is doing to food.
