Sufi Whirling

What's sufi whirling, and how is it beneficial? I understand one should simply whirl until one gets tired but how does it help? Is it dangerous? How long can we do it? Do we have to do it on an empty stomach?

I remember Alan Watts saying in his speech about meditation that sufi whirling is done to be free of the mind. It is also done as the first exercise in the "Tibetan 5 rites" which was talked about elsewhere on this forum and related to ballet training. It seems from those talks that spinning clockwise or anti clockwise makes a difference. In my experience, the dizziness and nausea only starts if I stopped spinning.

Get proper in person Instruction as you can really badly damage your knee joints over time if your feet are stepping incorrectly.

 

It is a devotional practice where you repeat the Name of God while whirling and requires and trains deep presence and awareness to do correctly.

 

Just spinning may have some mild health benefits but it will not make you a Dervish.
