Conscious Indulgence

Recommended Posts

Do tantra and tao both teach conscious indulgence. What I mean is: they both say repression of desires, thoughts, and impulses is dangerous. And if that's the case, the only other option is indulgence. It seems we have to indulge consciously. When you have sex, you have to do it consciously, and so on.

But in what way is it different from what we normally do? We're normally conscious while doing these activities, including sex. We're already indulging consciously, and it hasn't gotten us anywhere.

So what's the difference between this and tao/tantra?

I think indulge conciously would mean in a mindful manner almost as a practice in itself, opening to the partner and experience, not guilty, half hearted or mixed feelings following where your natures take you.

Can you unconsciously enjoy an orgasm without an ejaculation, for example? :-)

Plus being aware of you and your partner in an act can be at different levels of experience. You have to put your mind on them or otherwise you miss.

In Tantra, sexual practices are part of only the leftist path, the qualifications for entering which are many. Also, sex forms the fifth of the five leftist rites called pancha makara - and to be able to use it effectively, one should have transcended lust and identification with the physical body - to a certain degree. Only then can the stage of urdhvaretas (the upward flow of generational energy) which is so very important for sexual practices be achieved completely. In other words, the usefulness of such communion lies in the realm of the third etheric body - without that being activated or refined, it is simply a physical activity. So, it is not really the same as having sex or even having mindful sex. That said, it probably also depends on what one wants to achieve- through these indulgences or their transformations. Indulgence, Repression, Sublimation, Transformation ... :D
