  1. Maoshan Tao - When you know it's real?

Greetings as I had seen many post on Maoshan Tao. It has been years since I posted to this forum. Some post are closer to Maoshan than others. Because Maoshan Tao was never suppose to be used on humans the energy developed is somewhat deceptive, some of the "posters" who came to class for a short time, quit as it was too difficult. Yes, we do practice on each other, otherwise you would not know what you are doing and this cannot be shown in a video. You can only learn from a full Sifu of the lineage of Andrew Lum and Patrick Moon as registered in both Honolulu and Hawaii. Because of the confusion - and so little information given to the public in the past. It may be time to show the real "Maoshan Tao" to those who are serious about practicing. Because we knew that Maoshan Tao would be abused, Andrew Lum and Patrick Moon registered Maoshan Tao with the state of Hawaii and city of Honolulu to insure the integrity of Maoshan Tao. We knew others would abuse Maoshan as it is a very powerful system so it is easy for others to take Maoshan Tao and abuse it, pretending to be part of the lineage. Before anyone can teach in this style, permission was need from Sijyo Andrew Lum or Sijyo Patrick Moon. You can't learn Maoshan from books, DVDs, video streams, etc. There are people commercializing on Maoshan without permission to teach in China and the United States. Let me clarify that the 5 Element Sets are not Maoshan. You can ask Patrick Moon or myself when you come to class and we do cover the lineage so someone faking Maoshan on this forum does not have the authority to teach nor distribute material from our class. I have studied Maoshan Tao personally from both Patrick Moon and Andrew Lum for over 30 years. I have looked through internet search to see if there are any others teaching. http://maoshantao.com I saw a post from a former student saying that the "Sifus of Maoshan" did not want to be identified. This is completely false! The truth is he studied with Sijyo Patrick Moon for 2 days and quit. He learned the basic sets from me, but at the time I had asked Andrew Lum and Patrick Moon if I could teach so that I would have a core group to practice when I came back to from Hawaii to California. I was not a Sifu at the time as the advancements in Maoshan has greatly outperformed; since, I was a student getting permission from Patrick Moon and Andrew Lum. I was able to speak with Sijyo Andrew Lum before he past away. It is sad as I do see Maoshan videos on YouTube of those claiming to be Maoshan in China, and the U.S., but even they admit they don't know the real lineage. If people don't know their lineage, they are telling you that they are not associated with the real Maoshan. Please know that due to the timeframe, the question is do you want to work out and get a real "Rolex" or a fake 'Rolex.' The real Maoshan or someone who takes classes for a few years selling material that has no value. It's your choice so I am not going to tell you what you want to do. I see enough Maoshan threads and there are only 2 Sifu/Sijyo who are still alive. My goal is to train the next generations of instructors and not hold anyone back who has the aptitude to follow the instructions set forth with material that is not even true. Once you come to class, all will be revealed to you once you are part of the "Maoshan Community." I hope this post finds all of you in good health! Sifu Hata http://maoshantao.com
  2. balancing the elements

I wonder if there are any good books about the five elements and how to balance them through diet/environment? I also seek a deeper understanding about the balance of these elements. I found out that I'm low on fire and really high on water. I also see that I'm low on metal while wood and earth are good.
  3. My Naturopath/LaC employer is mostly retiring soon and will likely be selling some of his books and supplies related to oriental medicine. His wife also has a large amount of TCM materials in Chinese and so basically at this time, I am putting together a list if there are some people who might be interested in making offers on any of the materials. Hopefully this drive link will work: https://drive.google.com/open?id=11Vhlz74OJMwJNFu9oQoeLYRqIzhbTScqh Also other related materials including a vintage ultrasound, ear candling stuff really old Bach Flower essence kits that are unopened and according to the people that make them, they don't lose their efficacy when passed the expiration date.
  4. Inspired by the recent thread I decided to try building a soul mirror once again, this time using the Chinese 5 elements as categories. I'm doing this because It's really good to somehow categorize the good and bad traits, so you know which side of you in general needs work the most. Chinese elements seem to have one additional option as opposed to FB's 'ether' element which is really no-option. I'm hoping that Chinese literature will offer a lot of specific information. I'm going to post here different sources that explain which element is corresponding to a given element. If anybum has a cool article or a book recommendation, please share. Those who have done soul mirror exercise: ideas are welcome! So far I've found this: https://www.slideshare.net/DieselDave8/wu-xing-wu-shen-personality-traitsarchetypes-who-do-you-think-you-are http://susanlevitt.com/about/writers-resume/the-five-taoist-elements-fire-earth-metal-water-and-wood/ http://www.chinesefortunecalendar.com/pc/Angel/5EPersonality.htm
  5. Balanced "negative" emotions

A lot of people who follow spiritual paths are very suppressive of their "negative" emotions, hoping to "extinguish" them. I'd like to talk a bit about this, especially regarding the total suppression of anger. Much of post-Qin era Taoism showed influence from The Doctrine of the Mean, which speaks of having balanced levels of both positive and "negative" emotions. Chuang Tzu also reflected someone who did not suppress their emotions, but lived in balance and harmony with them. His influence appeared to show in some Zen "attitudes" as well. Please see the following quote from The Doctrine of the Mean, by Zisi (Confucius' grandson): "While there are no stirrings of pleasure, anger, sorrow, or joy, the mind may be said to be in the state of Equilibrium. When those feelings have been stirred, and they act in their due degree, there ensues what may be called the state of Harmony. This Equilibrium is the great root from which grow all the human actings in the world, and this Harmony is the universal path which they all should pursue. Let the states of equilibrium and harmony exist in perfection, and a happy order will prevail throughout heaven and earth, and all things will be nourished and flourish." So, even though Confucian influence is often considered to be the source of cold, passionlessness in demeanor, Confucius' grandson, Zisi, knew that the emotions of pleasure, anger, sorrow, and joy, were to be allowed to sprout "in their due degree." Someone recently posted about being diagnosed with weak liver qi, being in a job they feel stuck in and afraid to leave, and feeling depression about the whole thing. I noticed that the poster also said they felt better after some kung fu classes, but wasn't comfortable with the aggressiveness of it. He also dealt a lot with his frustration. Now in a case like this, some would ask: "should anger be suppressed in order to avoid further liver qi issues?" Anger is an emotion of the liver. Look at it this way: Liver is wood energy. Wood rises. When you're trying to rise and something gets in your way, what emotion tries to fight it? Anger. Extreme anger just burns out the liver, like putting fire to the wood. But anger, in balance, is useful. It's a function, if you will. If you overly suppress "negative" emotions, they will also become problems which manifest physically. Sometimes a chi kung healer will even need to release the suppressed emotions using various possible techniques. This may include the healer manifesting the emotion themselves in order to help the client's release of it (see Sat Chuen Hon's "Taoist QiGong for Health and Vitality"). So, if you face a situation which requires a bit of constructive anger, but suppress the anger, what happens? how do you deal with it? Most often, people deal with it by wateriness, fear, avoiding, trying to find a way around it no matter how much they have to adjust themselves. Adaptability can be a positive attribute of courage, but when it's based in fear, it taxes the kidneys which leads to more fear. When the liver energy is strong, it draws water energy from the kidneys in balanced amounts which keeps the water energy from being stagnant (the worst way for water to be is stagnant). This way, the kidneys' energy provides courage, and nourishes the liver which can provide the upward force needed to push through the weeds and branches and get to the sunlight! (ie., finally changing a situation) So, just remember if you ever feel that being a "shrinking violet" is part of the spiritual path, that you may be doing you, and your path, a lot more harm than good. (note: this may contradict your structured program of spiritual development. If this is the case, I do not mean to suggest that you should abandon the techniques prescribed by it). Any comments or criticisms on the above article are welcome.
  6. The Taoist view holds 5 elements while the western tradition holds that there are 4 elements. Can everyone please share their understanding of how the two systems translate? What is the relationship between the air element and the metal element, and the addition of the wood element. I nkow that the 5th western element is ether, but how does this relate to metal and wood? I know that the Taoist way was derived from the process of nature observed, but so was the western element view. Personally I'm more comfortable with the Taoist view, but just want to meld them together...
