In Albert Camus' novel "A Happy Death," the main character Mersault kills a rich invalid cripple named Zagreus in order to use his money to buy more time for living. Just before Zagreus is killed, he talks with Mersault in which he expresses sorrow that he'll never be able to enjoy his money OR his time and hopes that Mersault finds a way to happiness. But that's precisely my problem. Does Taoism really say NOTHING at all about ethics? If so, doesn't that mean virtue is totally arbitrary and so those acts really are "with the Tao" or "with the Te" 100% of the time? Take theft for instance. I've certainly committed it throughout my life as has everyone. But it somehow feels more natural to me now than before, so how can it be explained? Is my lack of guilt simply of not being afraid to get caught or am I fooling myself and there's something wrong with me deep inside? So are Taoists utilitarianism who despise deontology? I can't imagine any Taoist having anything positive to say about a religion or philosophy as dogmatic Islam, for instance.

Suppose killing gives someone pleasure and happiness. Even if he is insane (most serial killers are not), can he be considered a taoist if he believes in its basic premises?

The Chinese Communist Party is essentially the world's largest guardian of capitalism today. I have no doubt that China and the West in general are becoming more concerned with materialism as religion fades. Analytic philosophy in the West has contributed to this as well. I've never been to China, but I think it's a morally dead country. There is no real widespread will for political and individual freedoms, and there never has been, especially not during the rule of the emperors. So is taoism really that influential over there anyway?

Primary hypertension is known as the silent killer as many who have it don't know they do. Its etiology is unknown yet it leads to so many other health problems. So not counting traditional Chinese medicine, are these any Taoist practices that can treat it? Since blood pressure was unmeasurable over two hundred years ago, I doubt that there'd be any scientific validity to any such practices, if they exist.

Well then if most taoists don't consider taoism a religion, I'd assume most would be actively opposed to religion as an atheist would? I can't imagine any taoist to have anything positive to say about Islam. I sure don't.

I'm only beginning to understand taoism, but I'm not too familiar with feng shui. I have to experience furniture placement myself before I can believe in it. Btw, does feng shui emphasize on the design, material, and utility of furniture itself, or just its placement? I hope it does, as I find so many of the world's problem attributable to poorly made chairs and beds, which we spend most of our lives using.
