Anyone here involved with or know much about Martinism? I've always found the topic interesting but have yet to study anything in depth or read any of the works of the founders.

Based on some of the readings I've done on the basic doctrines, especially around ideas of the Fall and reintegration, it sounds quite similar to and perhaps a Christian version of what one might find in Daoist alchemy or otherwise, i.e. restoration of the primordial state. For those with a knowledge of the topic, is this accurate? Does Martinism have a relation with alchemy, Western or otherwise?

Finally, does anyone know any good literature on the topic? Any particular work recommended to start with?

All that I can contribute is to say that there are different Martinist groups today, and one should look through them all if they're interested in Martinism.

This one is interesting to me but because of not living near them I can't share any experience.

I had never heard of Martinism so thank you for this thread! (And thank you, Aetherous, for the link.)

I have to admit, my first thought was of Martinizing...

Martinizing is sizing the cocktail to martin standards, for example a 20 ounce martini.

In europe there are quite a few martinist orders, I think it's something traditional.

For what I know, it's true that they have a connection with internal alchemy and they actively follow a path of spiritual ascent: generally, they have many connections with masonries, gnostic orders and various egyptian regimes.

The good ones I'm aware of, they're very skeptical about kremmerz's work, but it's an issue relatively big to be discussed by people like me.

BTW, Internal alchemy in the west is apparently (I have no direct experience) all about rites: don't expect a qigong/neigong style of neidan.

I thank you for your response and bringing up your latter point, because it was a question I've had that I am not educated enough to speculate on, namely the relationship and potential harmony of qigong/neidan and Western practices and traditions, such as with Martinism specifically or alchemy more generally.

Again, this may be coming from ignorance here, but perhaps the concept of "qi" or a spiritual energy in the world is compatible with the doctrine of the uncreated energies one sees in Eastern orthodox conceptions relating to theosis and thus provide a rational reason to pursue qigong/neidan in a purely Western esoteric/Hermetic or even purely Christian context.

there seems to be a certain strand of Martinism linked to Robert Ambelain that includes the following groups: Kabbalistic Order of the Rose Cross, Ordre Martiniste des Elus Cohens, and Eglise Gnostique. this is the same Robert Ambelain who was head of the Rite of Memphis Misraim and has a few PDF's available online about Kabbalah and Theurgy
