I live in china, and I have heard some refer to the dantian when speaking of the lower abdomen or belly. Different sources translate the dantian in a different way.
丹田 translated by some sources is the pubic region or energy center or cinnabar field or stomach or field where ones qi resides
丹 can mean, red, pellet, powder or cinnabar
田 can mean, field, arable land or cultivated.
From the Chinese person sitting right next to me. She says it means 下腹部(xiafubu) meaning hypogastrium. It is most commonly amongst regular folk, as in people who don't practice qigong or any related things, regarded as the lower abdomen which can be in turn be called stomach or belly.
For those who don't know. Chinese is a language where one word can have loads of different meanings. And the meaning of the word can only be understood sometimes by knowing the person saying these words. The exact meaning of dantian is kind of pointless to know though. It makes very little difference in the great scheme of things i would have thought.
But anyway, hope this helps.
